Summer Bucket List {kids edition} 2013

UPDATE: 2013
This summer is going to be a fun one!

Can not believe my baby is going to be going to FIRST GRADE in 4 mos!!!
I am compiling a {wish} list of fun things to do in the unifour area as well as some great ideas for day trips. Some of these can be week day play dates and some will be reserved for our family! I really think they ALL lend well to either. Our theme this summer is

NEW ADVENTURES/ SPREADING OUR WINGS!!

{Local} Summer Fun
This place is great! We have a Membership $70/yr is so worth it!
We go at least once a month! They have wonderful week long summer camps that have fun theme each week.

Great pool and waterslide, can take your own picnic. Half price after 4pm AWESOME!

Haven’t been yet but Discovery Channel LOVES it. Great loco for a play date!

FUN!! We went last year and had a great time. They also have a carousel and play area
.
Haven’t been here yet either, looks fun.
Tough Enough Rodeo
a good old fashioned rodeo right in Caldwell County! Talk about family fun! This place is a hoot! My son LOVED it. Just a tidbit of info. It doesn’t get really rolling until almost 8 so be warned it might be a late evening but, it was worth it. EAT before you go, all they have is cotten candy and a few muchies

Carmike Movies

What’s Eating You?

What's Eating Your Child?: The Hidden Connection Between Food and Childhood Ailments

Kelly Dorfman is a food detective like no other, her book What’s Eating your Child is amazing. I read it this past weekend and she further confirmed to me that our eating habits need work. Now, that being said I am a lucky mom. Jack has always loved fruits and veggies, he isn’t a big meat eater but the boy does love his carbs and it seems to me that when he eats bagels or pancakes or crackers then he eats ALL day. When he starts his day with protein and fruit he seems to be calmer. This is worth testing out some food trials. I suspect that we are dealing with a wheat or gluten intolerance and I know I have a milk/dairy issue that I am guessing he may as well. Here goes nothing…. a wing and a prayer. We are trying it again!

VBS ~ Snack Ideas {Operation Overboad}

Profile Picture

This year I am co-directing VBS but of course I still have to give my two cents on what will be on the menu for SNACKS!! Cokesbury has some good suggestions, but I always try and do fun things that the kids will enjoy, so here goes:

Day 1: Since I have been doing snacks we always do a quick/easy SNACK MIX  that the kids always LOVE… with our water theme I was thinking that this year we would use goldfish, swedish fish, oyster crackers, crasins, gummy worms, m&m’s  and chex mix

Day 2:  Jello Aquariums {blue jello with gummy worms, fish etc in the jello, goldfish swimming around}

Day 3 :  Kid Sushi  {roll ups}

Day 4:  Design a Fish!! (this is my favorite idea, yet!! take Peppridge Farm Goldfish bread and spread low fat cream cheese, give the kids a platter of veggies and fruit and let them design their own fish! Each table picks a winner and then the each get a little prize!)

Day 5: popsicles (water day!!!)

Jack’s Table {up-cycling}

IMG_4848

When I was digging through (quit literally) the attic I came across a table and chairs set that I had as a little girl! SCORE!!

I somehow can not find a before pic but it was white and needed a little TLC. I painted the whole table red and the taped off the top, leaving a 1in boarder and used the Krylon Chalk board paint. I also taped off the top of the chairs, I thought it would be cute to put names on the top!
I am just in love with how it turned out!
What do you think?

Loving the Rainbow

Every Spring, 1st Pres Pre-school has

“Art in the Park” this is where the kids (really the teachers schlep all the stuff out and hang it via clothes pins in massive April winds!) display their lovely art work for all the school to see, along with the town!

This year was a little random, with pumpkins and snowmen but, still it was all cute. Here are a few highlights of my precious boy, Jack age 3. ART.

Valentine’s Lollipops

P2021860I was looking through Valentine’s Ideas when I saw that Trendy Treehouse  did a great post and I was super excited to find Roots & Wings Co who posted this great recipe for Nana’s Suckers. I had never made suckers before but these were so cute that I had to give it a try. I had a little trouble finding sucker  molds. I didn’t have time to order the snazzy stainless steel ones they had so mine are a lot thinner. I think they turned out quit well. Especially since I had never even used a candy thermometer!! Thanks to the Sisters over at Roots & Wings Co I am in love and think I will be making suckers for every holiday!!
I halved the recipe. I only had 1 mold (5 lollipops) and this recipe made about 15 pops.
1 c sugar
1/4 c light karo syrup
1/4 c water
Bring to 260 degrees on a candy thermometer and then add coloring (I like the paste) and when it hits 290 take off heat and add flavoring. I used cherry.

This is what it looks like just as you need to remove it from the heat!! P2021864This is how I am going to give them to Jack’s Class.

Pumpkin Patch

Pumpkin Patch time!!! I love the fall and all the fun things that go with it. I have taken Little j to a “pumpkin patch” really just the front lawn at a local church covered in pumpkins the past two years but, now that he is a Big Boy it was high time we headed to a “real” patch! We went to Johnny Wilson’s Farm in Sawmills, NC it is about 25mins north of Hickory going up 321N. I have linked there website, though it has no info! It is a fantastic place. The family that owns it is so nice we got there almost a hour before they opened (as said I had no info) and they were as nice as can be! It’s $6 per person and that includes the tractor ride, corn maze, petting zoo, huge inflatable and a pumpkin! We had a blast! They also do school groups, parties and all sorts of fun stuff. We had a blast!! I will be adding Johnny Wilson’s Farm to my list of traditions! Thanks!!

j’s favorite~ tractor!

J & j in the Corn Maze

1st Birthday Party

These are the adorable, if I do say so myself, Monkey Cupcakes I made for Little J’s 1st Birthday! I also made a cake just for the birthday boy! I found an amazing cookbook The Whimsical Bakehouse.http://www.whimsicalbakehouse.com/ They have great ideas. I made a Banana Pound Cake with chocolate frosting. Here goes:
1 box Pound Cake Mix
2 eggs
1/3 c milk
1 banana, mashed
For the chocolate frosting I melt about 1/2 bag of chocolate chips with a bit of whipping cream and vanilla extract then slowly add powered sugar until I get it just right. Depending on the day it is a little different every time!
